How I Make Music With AI: Inside a New Era of Creation

People ask if AI made my music or if I did. The honest answer is both — and that's exactly the point. AI is the instrument. The vision, the story and the taste are still mine.

I'm an independent artist, and I make my music with AI-powered software. I'm not shy about it. We're at the start of a genuinely new era of music creation, and I'd rather be honest about how the songs get made than pretend it's 2005.

So here's how it actually works — and why I think this is the most creatively free time to be an artist in history.

Can AI really make music?

Yes. AI music tools can generate arrangements, melodies, vocals and full productions. But here's what people miss: a tool doesn't have anything to say. It can make a sound — it can't decide that a song should be about the barefoot walk home after a breakup, or that track three should feel like temptation. That decision is human. That's where the artistry lives.

My process: vision first, always

Every song I make starts the same way — long before any software opens:

  • The idea. A feeling, a story, a single image. My album Heels on My Hand began as one concept: a single night unravelling, told in six stages of letting go. That blueprint is 100% human.
  • The emotion + genre. I decide the world — for that record it was chic vocal house: dance music you can cry to. The mood is the brief.
  • The generation. Now the AI tools come in. This is where unlimited iteration changes everything — I can chase an idea down ten different roads in an afternoon instead of booking ten studio days.
  • The curation. This is the real craft. I keep what serves the song and cut everything that doesn't. Taste is the filter. Most of the work is saying no until the yes is undeniable.
The AI is the instrument. The artist is still the one deciding what to say.

Why I embrace it: unlimited creation

The old way of making music had gatekeepers — expensive studios, label budgets, a thousand reasons to wait for permission. AI-powered creation removes the gate. If you have a vision, you can build it. Today. With no ceiling on how much you make or how fast you grow.

That's the part that excites me most: unlimited creation. Inspiration doesn't have to die in a notebook anymore waiting for budget. The distance between "I have an idea" and "here's the finished song" is shorter than it has ever been.

Is making music with AI cheating?

People said the same thing about the synthesizer. About the drum machine. About sampling, autotune, and the home studio. Every new music technology gets called "cheating" right up until it makes a generation of classics. AI is just the newest instrument. The only question that has ever mattered is the same one: does the song make you feel something?

What this means for you

It means more music, made by more people, from more places — including a Sydney independent artist building a whole world on her own terms. If you've ever wanted to make something and felt locked out, this era is for you too. And if you just want to listen — the songs are the songs. Press play and feel it.

Hear the new era.
